Athanasios Koumparos is senior engineer research and innovation at Vodafone Innovus.
Below is a statement from him about the European project:
“For the IoT world, the Perocube project demonstrated, among others, the potential of using light as a power source, communication channel and as an indoors navigation tool. At Vodafone Innovus, we integrated these capabilities into our IoT platform and tested possible solutions to meet customer needs. The results are promising and indicate that further research could lead to IoT devices running exclusively on ambient light sources. This is encouraging given the need for dozens of devices inside buildings to run with zero battery need, which would have a positive impact on the environment. Also, the led driving circuits that are produced at factory can be coded with specific distinct IDs then the market could open for non-GPS positioning in all areas with artificial lighting; each lamp could be a location point. Lastly, we saw that 2-way communication, even at low data rates, can offer data links with added security of the transmitted data over traditional RF signals.”
